The bathroom is the room you use most in your home. It's where you start and end your day. A beautiful, clean and functional bathroom really changes your daily routine.
But an old bathroom is just trouble. Hidden leaks that rot the floor beneath, mold in the grout or behind the walls, poor ventilation that creates humidity everywhere, and 30-year-old plumbing that could fail at any time.
In Lévis, especially in bungalows dating from the 70s and 80s in Saint-Étienne or Lauzon, we often see bathrooms with pink or blue ceramic tiles, faded melamine vanities and yellowed acrylic bathtubs. Not to mention the problems hidden behind the walls.
Too often, we repair botched renovations: ceramic tiles laid directly on ordinary drywall that gets moldy, poorly installed drains that leak into the ceiling below, or fans that go nowhere and create condensation.
We do it by the book. Perfect sealing, adequate ventilation, durable materials. A bathroom that will last a minimum of 15-20 years.
Before we start, we inspect everything: the condition of the floor beneath, the walls, the existing plumbing, the ventilation. We check for mold, leaks or structural damage.
If we find any problems, we tell you in advance and fix them before we finish the bathroom.
We remove everything: ceramic tiles, vanity, bath or shower, toilet, floor. We dismantle right down to the plywood and studs to make sure everything's safe underneath.
We protect the rest of the house with tarps and take out the debris every day.
If the floor is rotten or soft, we replace it. If the studs are damaged, we reinforce them. Make sure everything is solid, level and ready to receive the new materials.
Always install a waterproof membrane (such as Kerdi or RedGard) on shower walls and around the bathtub to keep water out.
We replace or relocate the plumbing according to the new plan. We install modern faucets, compliant drains and make sure there are no leaks.
For electricity, we add GFCI outlets near the sink, install a proper fan that really takes the humidity outside, and put in modern lighting (pot lights, light above the mirror).
Everything is done according to the Quebec Building Code.
We install quality ceramic or porcelain tiles on the walls and floors. We use modified thin-set mortar, install straight tiles with uniform joints, and seal with epoxy grout or standard grout with sealer.
For showers, we often recommend large-format porcelain, which reduces the number of joints (and therefore mold and mildew).
Install a modern vanity with practical storage. Floating vanities are popular in Lévis - they give a contemporary look and are easier to clean underneath.
For countertops, we recommend quartz (durable, maintenance-free) or granite. Laminate is fine for tighter budgets.
If you want a walk-in shower, we can build it with a real drain slope, ceramic walls and a tempered glass door.
If you're keeping the bath, we can install a bath/shower combo with acrylic or tile walls, depending on your budget.
Acrylic or fiberglass shower bases are less expensive, but don't age as well as ceramic.
Always install a fan to exhaust humid air outside (never in the attic). This is essential to prevent mold.
We install the accessories (towel rails, hooks, paper dispenser), set up the mirror and touch up the ceiling paint.
It's the number-one problem in Lévis bathrooms. Mould grows in the grout, behind the walls and under the floor because of poorly managed humidity.
The key is perfect waterproofing (waterproof membranes), adequate ventilation and moisture-resistant materials.
Often, leaks come from the shower drain, the joint around the tub, or a slow-running faucet. Water collects underneath and rots the plywood.
We see this a lot in old houses in Saint-Romuald or Charny when we dismantle the bathroom.
All damaged flooring is replaced before the new tiles are installed.
Many old bathrooms just have a small window or a fan that vents into the attic. The result: condensation, mold, peeling paint on the ceiling.
We install a modern fan (minimum 50 CFM for a small bathroom, 80-100 CFM for a large one) that really exhausts to the outside.
This happens when ceramic tiles are laid on a floor that moves or has no decoupling membrane. This is often seen in condos or houses with joists spaced too far apart.
Reinforce the floor, install a membrane (such as Ditra), then install the ceramic tiles as required.
Older homes in Lévis often have copper or galvanized plumbing that is nearing the end of its life. We see leaky faucets, clogged drains and corroded pipes.
We replace everything with modern PEX for the water and ABS for the drains. It lasts 50 years with no problems.
Bathrooms that are too small, with a door that clashes with the toilet, or not enough storage space, or a bath that takes up all the space even though nobody uses it.
We rethink the layout to maximize space: walk-in shower, vanity with drawers, wall-mounted shelves.
We're based here in Lévis (2552 chemin du Fleuve), and we've been renovating bathrooms for years in all kinds of houses: bungalows, multi-storey homes, condos, semi-basements.
We know the local challenges: high humidity near the river, shifting old stone foundations, bathroom floors over unheated basements.
Each project comes with our 5-year warranty on labor. If a tile comes loose or a joint leaks as a result of our work, we come back to repair it free of charge.
We work cleanly: we protect your house, we close off the work area with tarps, and we take out the debris every evening. If you only have a bathroom, we do our best to make sure you can use it at night.

No, not really. If you have a second bathroom, you'll have to use that one. If it's your only bathroom, we can install a temporary toilet in the basement or elsewhere.
Ceramics and labor (30-40% of the budget), then the vanity and countertop (15-20%), and the shower or bath (15-20%).
Yes, absolutely. If we find mold, we treat it with appropriate products, remove all contaminated materials, and make sure the source of the moisture is resolved before continuing.
It depends on your needs. If you've got kids, a bath is practical. If it's just adults, a walk-in shower is more modern and more accessible. You can also combine a bath with a shower.
Yes, if you like. We install electric heating cables under the ceramic. It costs about 800 $ to 1,500 $ more, but it's really comfortable in winter.
