Insulation & Decontamination

A healthy, safe, and contaminant-free home.

Isolation & decontamination

Do you notice a strange smell in your house? Does your basement smell musty? Are there black spots on the walls? Or is your house always cold in winter despite the heating being turned up high?

These issues aren't just a matter of comfort—they're a matter of health for your family.

Mold, asbestos, poor insulation, or contaminants after a disaster can make your family sick. Allergies, respiratory problems, constant fatigue—often, it's the air in your home that's to blame.

At Solutions Rénovation Québec, We'll take care of decontaminating your house and insulating it properly. Real problems are solved at the source, not just the symptoms. Because a healthy home is the foundation of everything.

The Problems We See All the Time

Visible or hidden mold

Black spots on the walls, musty odors, mold behind furniture or in corners. Mold always comes from a moisture problem.

Fungi in the basement or crawl space

Mushrooms growing on wooden joists, the smell of damp earth, rotting wood. These are signs that moisture is not being controlled.

Asbestos in old materials

Many houses built before 1990 contain asbestos—in insulation, floor tiles, textured ceilings. It is only dangerous when damaged or disturbed, but it must be handled properly.

Poor insulation

Poorly insulated attic, cold walls, thermal bridges, drafts. The result: high heating bills, an uncomfortable home, and condensation that creates humidity.

Damage after a loss

After water damage, a fire, or flooding, contaminants, soot, and trapped moisture often remain. If not cleaned properly, this can cause long-term problems.

Inadequate ventilation

Not enough air exchangers, dirty ducts, stale air that doesn't circulate. This concentrates pollutants and humidity in the house.

Contaminated vermiculite in the attic

Old vermiculite insulation (gray granules) that may contain asbestos. Must be removed with caution.

Our Decontamination Services

Mold Remediation

Mold is serious. It can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and asthma, especially in children and the elderly.

Our process:

Complete inspection. We identify all contaminated areas, both visible and hidden. We use moisture detectors to find the sources of the problem.

Containment of the area. Isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of your home.

Removal of contaminated materials. Remove gypsum, insulation, wood, or any other material that is too contaminated to be cleaned. Dispose of all of this safely.

Cleaning and disinfection. Recoverable surfaces are cleaned with professional antimicrobial products. Vacuuming is performed with appliances. HEPA to capture spores.

Preventive treatment. An antimicrobial treatment is applied to prevent mold from returning.

Correcting the source of moisture. This is the most important step. If you don't fix the source (leak, inadequate ventilation, water infiltration), the mold will come back. Find the cause and fix it.

Repair and finishing. We reinstall new drywall, insulation, and repaint. Your home returns to normal, but this time, without mold.

Fungus Removal

Mushrooms growing in the wood of your house are a sign of rot. You need to act quickly before the structure is compromised.

What we do:

Identify the extent of the problem, remove rotten or contaminated wood, treat affected areas with fungicides, replace the wood with new wood, and, most importantly, fix the moisture problem that caused it (external drainage, crawl space ventilation, inadequate insulation).

Asbestos Removal

Asbestos is only dangerous when the fibers become airborne. But if you want to renovate an area that contains it, you have to remove it properly.

What we do:

First, we test to confirm the presence of asbestos. If the result is positive, we create a removal plan that complies with Quebec standards. We seal off the work area, use protective equipment, safely remove the asbestos, thoroughly clean with HEPA vacuums, and dispose of the materials at an authorized site.

All our staff are trained in asbestos removal. We comply with all CNESST standards.

Disaster Cleanup

After a fire, major water damage, or flooding, your home may be contaminated with soot, mold, chemicals, or bacteria.

What we do:

We assess the extent of the damage, remove anything that is too damaged to be salvaged, clean thoroughly with specialized products, disinfect, deodorize (important after a fire), completely dry out the structures with industrial dehumidifiers, and rebuild what has been removed.

We often work with insurance companies. We can help you with the documentation for your claim.

Ventilation System Cleaning

Dirty ventilation ducts are a breeding ground for dust, mold, allergens, and bacteria. Every time your system runs, it distributes all of these throughout your home.

What we do:

We clean your air ducts, air exchanger, and ventilation grilles. We use rotating brushes and powerful vacuums to remove all dirt. We disinfect with antimicrobial products. The result: cleaner air and a more efficient system.

Our Insulation Services

Attic Insulation

The attic is where you lose the most heat in winter. A typical house loses 25-30% of its heat through the roof if the attic is poorly insulated.

What we do:

We evaluate your current insulation (often it's only R-20 or R-30, when you should have R-50 or more). We remove the old insulation if it is contaminated or compacted. We install new blown-in cellulose or fiberglass insulation (R-50 to R-60). We make sure the attic is properly ventilated (air intakes at the soffits, air outlets at the ridge). We seal air leaks around ducts, chimneys, and access hatches.

Result: a warmer house in winter, cooler in summer, and lower energy bills.

Wall Insulation

Old walls often have little or no insulation. If you feel drafts or your exterior walls are cold to the touch, that's the problem.

What we do:

For existing walls, insulation can be injected into the cavities (blown insulation or foam). For major renovations, the walls are opened up, mineral wool or fiberglass is installed, a vapor barrier is added, and the walls are closed up again with new drywall.

Basement Insulation

A poorly insulated basement is cold in winter and can cause condensation problems.

What we do:

Insulate foundation walls with rigid panels (extruded polystyrene or polyurethane). Insulate the floor with an insulating subfloor system. Ensure that humidity is controlled (vapor barrier, dehumidifier).

Crawl Space Insulation

A poorly insulated or poorly ventilated crawl space is a major source of moisture, mold, and heat loss.

What we do:

Clean the crawl space, install a vapor barrier membrane on the floor, insulate the foundation walls and/or the floor above, and improve ventilation if necessary.

Sealing Air Leaks

Before adding insulation, you need to seal any air leaks. Otherwise, the warm air will still escape.

What we do:

Identify air leaks (around doors and windows, electrical outlets, ducts, chimneys, attic hatches). Seal them with caulk, expanding foam, or weatherstripping. The result: a more airtight home and more effective insulation.

Why Insulation and Decontamination Go Hand in Hand

Mold problems are often caused by poor insulation. When your walls or attic are poorly insulated, condensation forms. The warm air in your home meets cold surfaces, and boom—moisture forms. This moisture creates mold.

That's why we offer both services. We decontaminate what's contaminated, then we insulate properly so the problem doesn't come back.

Signs You Need Our Services

Persistent musty smell

If your house smells musty or like a basement, it's a sign of hidden mold.

Black or greenish spots on walls

It's mold. You can't just clean it with bleach—you have to remove the source of the problem.

Allergies or respiratory problems that improve when you leave the house

It is often caused by contaminants in indoor air.

High heating bills

If you turn the heat up high and your house still stays cold, it's a problem with insulation or air leaks.

Condensation on windows in winter

Sign of excessive moisture or poor ventilation.

Ice or frost in the attic in winter

A sign that warm air from your home is rising into the attic (air leaks) and creating condensation.

Recent water damage

If you've had water damage, even minor damage, you need to act quickly before mold starts to grow (it only takes 24-48 hours).

How much does it cost?

It depends on the scope of the problem, but here are some realistic estimates:

  • Mold decontamination (50-100 square foot area): 2 000-5 000$
  • Major decontamination (several rooms or entire basement): 5 000-15 000$+
  • Asbestos removal (entire attic): 3 000-8 000$
  • Disaster cleanup: Varies depending on coverage, often covered by insurance
  • Attic insulation (1,000 square feet at R-50): 2 500-4 000$
  • Basement insulation: 3,000-6,000$ depending on the surface area

We will give you an exact price after the free assessment. If it is a claim, we will work with your insurance company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all mold dangerous?

All mold can cause health problems, especially for sensitive individuals (children, seniors, people with respiratory problems). Some molds are more toxic than others, but no mold should be allowed to grow in your home. All mold must be removed.

Can mold be cleaned with bleach?

Bleach kills mold on surfaces, but does not penetrate porous materials such as drywall or wood. Worse still, it does not address the source of moisture. The mold will return. For permanent decontamination, contaminated materials must be removed and the cause corrected.

How can I tell if my house contains asbestos?

The only way to know for sure is to have a sample tested in a laboratory. Houses built before 1990 are more likely to contain it. If you have any doubts before renovating, we can do a test. It costs around $50-100 per sample.

How long does mold decontamination take?

For a small area (closet, bathroom corner), 1-2 days. For an entire basement, 3-5 days. For major cases involving several rooms, a week or more. It depends on the extent of the problem.

Do I have to leave my home during decontamination?

Not necessarily, if the work area can be effectively contained. But if it's a major decontamination or asbestos removal project, it's often recommended that you leave for a few days, especially if you have children or respiratory problems.

How much insulation is needed in attics in Quebec?

The building code recommends a minimum of R-40, but we recommend R-50 to R-60 for our climate. The more you insulate, the more you save on heating. The investment pays for itself in energy savings.

Is blown insulation as good as panels?

Yes, even better in some cases. Blown insulation (cellulose or fiberglass) fills all corners, cracks, and spaces—no thermal bridges. It's our preferred method for attics.
